Plasma red LED tail light bulbs

Postby StephenSLR » Sun Jul 12, 2015 1:12 pm

I just bought a set of these from West Coast Cougar Classics for my Mustang and thought I'd share.

A few of my friends have also tried numerous other LED bulbs and all have said these are by far the best.

Links for anyone interested in picking up a set:

http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/plasma6.html (6 pack)

They emit red light and replace 1157 bulbs.

i was looking for something like those in yellow for when i did my DRL mod to my front turn lamps.

unfortunately they are not legal here in SA as they are not ADR compliant. (mate has already been pinged)

ended up with #2357 lamps which are a higher wattage #1157 lamp.

then i found "Sylvania 3496 LL" lamps which i use now, brightest i've seen so far.

there's also Honda globes that's the brightest of them all, but they don't stock the here in Au,

So what is the difference; how did the cops know?

I can't see them taking out the lamps to check them.

hap'nd couple years ago with his daily driver, not a classic car.
random roadside check/breatho, cop noticed his fast / irregular flash rate as he pulled in.
appon closer inspection, the cop spotted the LED lamp sticking thru the clear turn signal housing.
had to go have an inspection at roadworthy center.

when i did my DRL's, i asked the RAA, (racq, racv, nrma etc), tech service about them,
and they said that as they are not OEM they do not pass.
if the car comes from the factory with them fitted, that's ok,
but unless they are ADR approved, you karnt retro fit them.

other states many have different/better rules than here.... :o

That and if you add a resistor to the circuit the signal rate returns to normal.

Yes, a friend back in the 80's bought some cheapo blinker module from a supermarket and had the same problem when he went over the pits; they can't flash too fast.

Mine flash at a comfortable rate; nothing unusual. I have LED dash lights and LED rear brake/blinkers, all the rest are still incandescent.

From what I hear; if you change all your lights to LED; in total, the LED's don't put enough load on the system and the blinkers flash faster; you get around this as mentioned; put in a resistor; some kits come with them as an optional extra; these didn't.

However, the resistance depends on the car, even in the same model; some guys do get away without a resistor even after going full LED.

Jethro

wasn't my car, hapn'd to a mate few years ago. :o

the cops are picky with things like that over this way. :x-
remember, i live in the state where my LHD has to be absolutely stock to get rego....
convert to RHD, and i can do anything i'd like to it.

i more than happy with the brightness of the "Sylvania 3496 LL" i put into the turn/brake sockets.
also put "Sylvania 3497 LL" into the other exterior sockets.
